THE BLENDING AND RUMS OF KRONAN PRODUCT LINE
At the heart of KRONAN Swedish Punsch lies a carefully selected blend of rums from Java (Indonesia), Guyana, and Jamaica. Each batch may exhibit slight variations in the proportion of these rums due to natural aging differences in individual barrels. However, our primary goal remains the same—to ensure consistency in flavor and quality from year to year.
Swedish Punsch has a long and distinguished history, first classified as a spirit in 1758 by King Adolf Fredrik and officially recognized as a Geographical Indication (GI) by the EU in 2006.

100 % in the KRONAN Batavia Arrack
Batavia Arrack is a historic rum-like spirit with roots tracing back to 17th-century Java. It is made by fermenting sugarcane molasses with the addition of red rice and introduction of wild yeast strains. Fermentation takes place in open teak vats, and the spirit is then double distilled in traditional copper pot stills, creating a complex and aromatic profile.
Aging & Selection: Traditionally aged in large 10,000L teak vats for a minimum of one year, our Batavia Arrack is carefully sourced to ensure a balanced and expressive representation of this heritage spirit.
Key Characteristics of Batavia Arrack:
• Aroma: Tropical fruit, spices, and earthy undertones.
• Palate: Bold and funky, with a smoky nuance and subtle sweetness.
• Finish: Long-lasting with a balanced interplay of spice and sugarcane character.

To honor early 20th-century Swedish traditions, we incorporate Port Mourant rum, distilled in one of the world’s last remaining double wooden pot stills, originally built in 1732 on the Demerara River. These stills, made from greenheart wood, produce a heavy-bodied rum with deep complexity.
Production & Aging:
• Distilled twice for a rich, full-bodied character.
• Aged in ex-bourbon American oak barrels in Guyana’s tropical climate, where heat and humidity accelerate aging, deepening the rum’s flavors.
• Typical aging:
• 3–5 years: Light vanilla and tropical fruit notes.
• 10–21+ years: Rich molasses, spice, and oak complexity.

Jamaican rum is famous for its bold, high-ester profile, crafted through long fermentation with wild yeast, often incorporating dunder (leftover wash from previous distillations) and muck pits to enhance its signature “funk”—a quality known as hogo (haut goût in French, meaning “high taste”).
Key Characteristics of Jamaican Pot-Still Rum:
1. Bold & Ester-Heavy Aromatics:
• Overripe banana, pineapple, and mango.
• Funky, fermented aromas with floral and spice notes.
2. Full-Bodied & Rich Texture:
• Viscous and molasses-forward, with high congener content.
3. Aged vs. Unaged Profiles:
• Unaged: Bright, ester, and fiery (e.g., Wray & Nephew Overproof).
• Aged (3–5 years): Balanced and structured with deeper caramel and spice notes (e.g., Hampden, Worthy Park, Appleton).
4. High-Ester ‘Continental Style’ Rums:
• Some Jamaican rums (e.g., Hampden DOK, Long Pond TECC) were historically used to fortify European spirits and were a key component in KRONAN Rum and Swedish Punsch.
The Final Touch
To transform these complex rums into KRONAN Swedish Punsch, we add only 212g of sugar per liter, along with water, to achieve the perfect 26% ABV—maintaining the authenticity and balance of this historic spirit.
For our Limited Edition 2024, we have lowered the sugar level to 200gr per liter and increased the alcohol content to 30% ABV. This remains fully compliant with the regulations set by the EU register and the Swedish Food Agency (Livsmedelsverket) for Swedish Punsch.
KRONAN remains deeply connected to its Swedish heritage, honoring traditional production methods while ensuring a consistent and refined drinking experience.
